Best Way to Get Sh*t Done!

I trust this finds you well! We are into week two of 2017, and if you are anything like me, perhaps you are feeling excited about what’s ahead but also a lil overwhelmed about all there is to do to make what’s ahead, happen!

It’s all good, and it’s why I want to share with you my number one tool for getting sh*t done! In fact, I am even implementing this practice as I write – it’s called The Pomodoro Technique.

jk-032-smallA lil background of The Pomodoro Technique … There once was an Italian graduate student studying in Florence – I know, sounds glamorous, right? Well, he knew the power of chunking his time and breaking down his studies so that his mind could absorb and learn, successfully. Spending endless hours studying felt overwhelming and didn’t seem to work. He used a timer, yes, in the shape of a Pomodoro tomato, to study in small increments followed by short breaks to refresh his body and mind. He became a master at learning, simply because of this technique.

I personally learned about this technique from one of my biz mentors, Racheal Cooke. While I don’t always practice Pomodoro’s, whenever I do, I find I am highly focused and productive. I get more done in less time and feel alert both physically and mentally. I am actually committing to do this technique more often because it is so influential in me getting sh*t done!

If you are someone who gets overwhelmed easily with so many tasks, benefits from structure and enjoys checking things off your to-do list, then I invite you to join me in practicing this technique!

Here are suggestions for implementing The Pomodoro Technique:

Get clear on your to-do’s. I am sure you have an everlasting list of things you need to do for your Kids Yoga biz. You know, emails, invoices, social media posts, etc., etc. Be sure to keep your list clean, updated and accessible. I personally enjoy using an app called Trello which syncs with my iPhone and desktop. Once you are clear on your to-do’s for the day, then it’s time to take action.

Take action. Have a seat with your to-do list and get clear on how long each item will take you. Identifying the time frame for each task, helps to successfully bang the item off your list. For example, I estimated I would spend one hour on this blog post. You may designate 45 minutes for emails, 30 minutes for social media, and 40 for invoicing. Up to you, whatever it is – set your timer and go to work. Feel free to use your phone timer or go old-school with a Pomodoro tomato timer.

Turn off all distractions. This is pretty much the MOST important thing for successfully getting sh*t done. When I do Pomodoro’s I put my phone on airplane mode and turn off all notifications including email, Facebook and instant messengers. I do not want to be interrupted during my precious work time. I keep these all on “off” until I complete that round of Pomodoro unless I am feeling inspired to stay offline during my break and in between sessions. Regardless, during the Pomodoro, I never bounce around onto social media or checking my phone and stay fully present with the task at hand. This is the magic of The Pomodoro Technique.

Reward yourself. Once the timer goes off, take a lil break. You did it! Maybe have a lil dance party, make yourself a smoothie, do a few handstands or get your dose of Facebook. Whatever it is, choose and stick to the amount of time you will break for because you don’t want to lag too much in between Pomodoro sessions or slip into distraction mode. I personally enjoy a 10 minute break in between sessions, just enough to recharge me before I get back to work and I often enjoy some movement or a light snack. I will be rewarding myself with coconut oil purple sweet potato fries that I made once I finish this blog post.

Do it again. Depending on your workload and time available, once you finish one Pomodoro round, why not do it again? Again, choose your task, set your timer, disengage from distractions, power through with focus on your work and enjoy a lil break! Sometimes I do three to four Pomodoro rounds back to back and that is a successful work day!

    I’m a handyman and finish carpenter. I’ve been using this technique for the last 6-9 months and can say without a shadow of a doubt that it works. If I’m at my desk I set a timer, if I’m on site, I base it on task completion. Either way, I work for just under an hour and take 10 minutes to chill out. After 3 chunks of time like that, I take 1/2 an hour and do it all over again. It’s awesome, I stay keen and fresh longer with better focus throughout the day. It pretty much rocks!;-)
