Celebrating Strong Women, by NGY Owner/CEO Amy Lee

Celebrating Strong Women
by NGY Owner/CEO Amy Lee

I love being a woman. I don’t recall any time in my life wishing I was not. I was born in 1971, a time that screamed inequality for women. I was too young to know that my mother couldn’t get a credit card in her own name. Or that she could’ve been fired for being pregnant with me. She couldn’t run in the Boston Marathon if she had wanted to.

I didn’t realize until recently how incredible, almost unbelievable, it must have been for my mom to see me graduate from college, have my own credit cards and bank accounts, buy my first car at 22 and buy my first house at 25 – all on my own – just a couple decades later.  I started traveling the world for work and for fun in my 20s. I ran marathons, worked my way up in corporate America from the time I was 22 and was fiercely financially independent. It never occurred to me for a moment that my life and opportunities would be anything different from that. I’m sure there are things I couldn’t do because I am a girl, but maybe those were things I didn’t want to do because I was never told, “Amy, you can’t do that because you are a girl”.

My earliest memories are of my grandmother who had her own business and my single mother who worked all day and then went to night school to earn her college degree. The women in my family were and are strong, independent, smart, courageous, determined, and not crippled by fear (and there was a lot of it). Being an independent woman is in my DNA.  The examples were set for me from the time I was born, and it’s all I’ve ever known.

A million thanks to the strong women who raised me and showed me how to be a lady, kick a**, and take names all at the same time. Without them as role models, I may not have believed I had the grit and determination to be a business owner and take action on my passions to make a difference in this world.

I’m grateful to have two daughters in this era where the world is literally their oyster. I have no doubt they will do great things and won’t be held back by their gender.  I actually pity any man who tries to get in their way, including their little brother!

Happy International Women’s Day to all.  It is a day to be celebrated and to be motivated to never stop pushing forward and making progress. It’s not always easy being a woman, yet if given the chance, I wouldn’t change a thing.
