I hope this finds you well. Can you believe it is August already!?! How is time moving so fast? As I look back on the past two months, and how I have spent my Summer … it’s been mostly healing a torn ankle tendon, practicing self-care and connecting 1:1 or in small groups with friends.
Here is a sweet pic of me with some girlfriends this past weekend …
Depending on where you live in the world, this month, for some, Kids Yoga Teachers are still enjoying time off from teaching and time on with family and friends. For others, it is almost time for back to school. And, of course for our friends on the other side of the globe, they are dreaming of Summer months ahead. 😉
Regardless of where you live and what you are doing right now, if you are committed to your career in the Yoga biz, it is always time to think about mentorship.
You may have heard my story and how I struggled starting up Next Generation Yoga. It was back in 1998, in New York City, where I was a former Special Education Teacher and clueless about marketing, finances and all things business. I had a clear passion and desire to teach Yoga to children but felt confused, scared and totally alone in how to make it happen. I grasped trying to figure it out on my own and feared having to go back to into the classroom. But deep down, I knew that there was a way for me to bust through and learn what I didn’t know.
And one day it happened!
At Equinox Fitness, I walked into my Yoga class and my teacher introduced himself as a coach helping Yoga Teachers with their business. While I didn’t know anything about coaching, the idea sounded perfect. I also didn’t how I was going to pay for it, but I was sold & found a way to hire Michael Port as my business mentor.
What I learned from Michael was basic business strategies. He was an expert in the business of Yoga and he taught me what he knew. He was my cheerleader and held me accountable when I wasn’t able to do so myself.
Hiring a business mentor was the best decision of my life simply because my career reflected success.
I learned how to market myself, got a website, my classes started to fill to capacity and I was slowly and confidently building a solid Kids Yoga business.
From my early days of working with Michael, I learned the immense value of having a mentor. In fact, I whole-heartedly admit that I am successful in my business, love & personal life because I’ve got mentorship.
Having an intimate relationship and the support of a mentor on a regular basis is truly priceless.
Here are some ways that having a mentor will help you to be successful in your Kids Yoga biz …
A mentor will help get you started … Sometimes the hardest part in achieving your goals is figuring out the first steps. A mentor has already been down your path and knows the specific tasks that need to happen in order to get where you want to go. Having the support and a detailed plan of action will save you time and resources.
A mentor will build your confidence … Oftentimes starting something new or going after a dream can be filled with mixed emotions. It can be scary and intimidating, overwhelming and stressful. A mentor is there to give you undying encouragement and help build your confidence. There is nothing like hearing, from someone you admire and respect, some powerful positive reinforcement, always.
A mentor is a resource for life … Regardless if you work directly with a mentor for a year, less or more, this person will forever be in your life. Their voice of reason will echo inside your head when you are unsure how to proceed and they will likely be available for you to check in with or refer you to someone you should meet and know.
I could go on and on about how having a mentor is essential, but I’ll leave you with this simple statement … if you want to grow your business, have support with priceless resources, in a shortened learning curve, then don’t wait or miss the opportunity to have a special someone on your team.
Mentors can be found locally or across the country. Just be sure that you resonate with this person and that they have the skills, business and lifestyle that you desire for yourself.
