Wednesday Wisdom ~ Be of Service

On today’s ‘Wednesday Wisdom’ I share about the importance of being of service. I am sure you have all heard about the horrible fires in northern California, especially the Valley Fire which is still not fully contained. The fire went through areas not too far from me and burned a very special place in my heart: Harbin Hot Springs. I have spent many, many wonderful days retreating there. The blessing is that the water is still flowing and it will be rebuilt.

What I really want to share is that there is heartbreak like this all over the world and sometimes we think there is nothing we can do about it. But last week I spent 8 hours in selfless service sorting clothes for fire victims and it felt so good to be of service to others. Not only did it feel good in my mind, my body benefited as well. Lately my back has been hurting and during 8 hours of service I had no pain at all. It is so important to give to others selflessly and to let go of what is in it for us. You know that when you do good things for others the good comes back to you tenfold! So I ask you to look at your community and find out how you can be of service to others – there are plenty of opportunities big and small.

Check out this week’s video blog to learn how important it is to be of service. When I am of service to others – I know I transform myself!

I would love to hear your wisdom! When you are of selfless service to others, what opens up for you? How has service to others actually benefited your life?

Please leave a comment below so we can all learn from you!

All love,

PS ~ The Harbin Hot Springs community needs our help. The residents lost their homes and all their meaningful belongings. Please consider supporting with a financial contribution here.
PPS ~ Check out this video I made on this very topic: Being of Service. It encapsulates the work I have done with Africa Yoga Project and I just know you will LOVE it!

Hi, beautiful Jodi! I have a different perspective on the notion of “selfless service.” I believe, and Nonviolent Communication teaches, that there is no such thing as being “selfless.” Because one of the greatest universal needs that we all share as humans is the need to contribute to the well-being of others. So when we give, we are actually doing so in service of OUR OWN need to make other people’s lives wonderful. I know this rings true for me … I feel more full, more alive, more joyful when I give!

Here’s a beautiful song that expresses this well:

“Given To” (1978) by Ruth Bebermeyer

I never feel more given to than when you take from me –
when you understand the joy I feel giving to you.

And you know my giving isn’t done to put you in my debt,
but because I want to live the love I feel for you.

To receive with grace may be the greatest giving.
There’s no way I can separate the two.

When you give to me, I give you my receiving.
When you take from me, I feel so given to.

    Love you!
