Last year, I was laid off from my job of seventeen years as a graphic designer. Seventeen years! People who were born the year I started my job were almost old enough to vote. I was good at my job. It was comfortable and familiar, but really I found no joy in it anymore. As scary as it was to have a new baby, a new house, and, for the first time in my adult life, no job, I saw it as the universe’s way of giving me a swift kick in the pants.
Shortly thereafter, a post popped up in my Facebook feed for the Next Generation Yoga Teacher Training for 2-7 yr. olds at a local Yoga studio. It was the first thing I’d seen in months that sparked an interest in me. Here was a perfect combination my two greatest loves: my children and Yoga. Despite feeling instantly drawn to it, I initially scrolled past thinking, “I can’t completely change directions at this point in my life.”
I saved the post though, going back to it often. Little by little, my thinking changed. “Well, why can’t I completely change directions at this point in my life?” With support from my family and friends, I took a huge step outside of my comfort zone and signed up for the Training. Any fears and doubts I had going in disappeared once I arrived. It was one of the best experiences of my life! The NGY philosophy really resonated with me. Share my love of Yoga with my own children and our community at large? Check. Be part of a network of strong, supportive people who truly wish to see each other succeed? Check. Feel personally and professionally fulfilled again? Check. Check. Check.
To say that seeing that post changed my life would be a massive understatement. I am now a certified Next Generation Yoga Teacher for 2-7 yr. olds, and soon will be certified for 8-13 yr. olds. I have also since joined the with NGY team in an administrative support capacity which will allow me to help others along their journeys. I feel so incredibly thankful that I found the confidence in myself to take this leap of faith. So if you’re having doubts, tell that little voice in the back of your head saying you can’t do it to shush, because if I can do it you totally can too.
