Say Hello to October’s Featured Trainer:
Read on for a Q&A with Joyce!
Next Generation Yoga Trainer for 2-7 yr. olds
Q: Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
A: My parents named me after the poet, Joyce Kilmer, who happens to be a he!! Joyce Kilmer is famous for his poem, Trees! Whenever I’m driving on the NJ Turnpike and approaching Exit 8A and pass the Joyce Kilmer service center, I tell whoever my passenger might be, that I was named after the poet, Joyce Kilmer and say, “I think that I shall never see. A poem lovely as a tree.” Deep gratitude to my parents for naming me after a famous Catholic poet. They raised me with a strong foundation that was rooted with so much love..
Q: What was your first experience with Next Generation Yoga?
A: My first experience with NGY was at a Teacher Training for 2-7 yr. olds with Jodi Komitor in 2002! Yes, 2002 and in NYC – I was in Jodi’s very first Teacher Training! I was a stay-at-home Mom with two young children at the time, and I wanted to work with kids on a part-time basis. Jodi was so inspirational and cultivated a passion to teach Yoga to kids. A truly magical weekend.
Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?
A: Well, I probably wanted to be a mommy first and foremost. My Mom was a stay-at-home Mom and the vacuum and dust cloth seemed attractive at the time. I then resonated with becoming a psychologist or English teacher. It’s probably because I loved my 3rd grade English teacher and adored my psychology teacher!
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone wanting to or currently teaching Yoga to Kids?
A: My one piece of advice is to make sure you are present with kids. Be accessible, approachable, and be a pillar of support and love. Be a springboard for them and validate each and every one of them. You never really know what’s going on in their sweet little minds. Secondly, always be your true authentic self! Lastly, love them!
